Sour Grapes

Currents Sermon Thought

How would you have felt if you were a political captive living in Babylon?  Against your will!

The ancient Jews were embittered by the experience, and even sang about it.  “Beside the rivers of Babylon, we sat and wept as we thought of Jerusalem….For our captors demanded a song from us….But how can we sing the songs of the Lord while in a pagan land?”  Psalm 137.

They also had a saying that reflected their bitterness.  “The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge.”  In this week’s sermon text, we are looking at that saying and asking, “is it true.”

Ezekiel was taking that aphorism to task and even saying, “Quit using that as a way to excuse yourselves for being in Babylon.”

The sermon this week looks at the matter of personal responsibility.

What are some ways you try to lay the blame on someone else for your failures?
