John Piper wrote a book by this title, but that is not the object of this rumination.
I have been thinking about what happens when someone honestly desires God., Psalm 63 is a poetic description of what such desire prompts in one’s life.
O God, you are my God. I seek you,
my soul thirsts for you,
as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
So I have looked upon you in the
sanctuary,
beholding your power and glory.
Because your steadfast love is better than life,
my lips will praise you.
So I will bless you as long as I live;
I will lift up my hands and call on your
name.
Desiring God is a reference to a hunger for God. Typically, a person who desires God 1) thinks about God a lot, 2) looks for ways to express that curiosity and interest, and 3) is changed in orientation to life and how one lives. “Desiring God” in the way the Psalmist describes is not just showing up on Sundays. It is reorientation.
This little article is meant to provoke thought about the depth of love one has for God. Is it, at best, a casual curiosity, or a down-to-the-bone obsession with God?
