Give Up a Feeling of Unworthiness and believe God’s affirmation

There is much in the life that wants to tell you how unworthy you are: jealous co-workers, angry teachers, bullies in school, and insecure associates. They are happy to tell you that you failed, that you are a hopeless imbecile, and that you’ll never make much of yourself.

Sadly, we are tempted to believe them. We pick up their vile words and carry them around like a suitcase. But God has a different story.

The gospels are full of stories about lepers, tax collectors, tarnished women, and such. They are the sort of people that Jesus loved to be with, and in each case Jesus gave them another narrative about themselves.

What story do you believe?

…you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light, 1Peter 2:9.

[O Lord] you go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand, Psalm 139:5,6.

That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life…Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest….for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? Matthew 6:27-27.

Question: Where do you most need the reassurance of God in order to put down some sense of unworthiness?

Activity: Give reassurance to someone today who needs your support and affirmation. Remember what it was you said to them and how it also applies to you.

Prayer: O God, my sufficiency is in you alone. Not in work. Not in education. Not even in my family. Help me to come to you alone for worth, and in so doing I will be stronger for every other area of my life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
