The fourth week of Advent has as its theme the idea of Love.  It is appropriate to have this theme in the last week of Advent for the following reasons:

  • Paul told the Corinthian church that love is the supreme gift that God gives us. Paul said, “Love never ends….And now faith, hope and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.  1 Corinthians 13:8,13.
  • Advent is, in its outlook, anticipatory. We are waiting for the second and final coming of Jesus.  He is coming to complete God’s work of redemption of God’s creation.  Jesus is ultimately God’s expression of love.  John said that, “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son…that everyone….may have eternal life.”  John 3:16.

In the coming of Love, wars will end.  Hunger will no longer exist.  Alienation and loneliness will be absorbed.  The planet will cease groaning as Paul said.  In Advent we long and wait for this.
